Some roads are built for riding—and the stretch into Hayden / Winkelman is one of Arizona’s best-kept secrets.
This area sits at the meeting point of the Gila and San Pedro Rivers, where ancient trade routes once carried the Hohokam through the desert long before pavement ever existed. Fast forward a few centuries, and the region became a copper powerhouse—home to towering smelter stacks and the kind of grit that shaped Arizona’s mining legacy.
Today, it’s a rider’s playground—sweeping curves, canyon-carved roads, and views that keep unfolding mile after mile.
Right in the middle of it all is Maria’s Mexican Restaurant—a no-frills, full-flavor stop known for good food and that “you found the right place” feeling after a solid ride.
